The use of PVC in medical devices began with Louis Pasteur, once considered the father of microbiology. In the late 1800s, he realized that bacteria were responsible for disease. His method of pasteurization and heating food and drink to kill bacteria was adopted by the medical sector to sterilize glass bottles with rubber stoppers and tubes made of rubber, glass or stainless steel. During the Korean War, battlefield mobile unit hospitals recognized that glass bottles were too fragile and fragile for IV fluids and blood. Later, PVC injection bags were developed to replace glass. PVC used in bags and flexible tubing can not only be RF sealed, but can also control the rate of fluid dispensing by sealing the drip chamber. The main reason is that PVC materials have good physical properties , including: the convenience of making PVC materials and the compatibility of such materials with veins (intravenous, iv ) good compatibility between injection and blood.

PVC is currently the material of choice for medical devices because it is not only visually clear, soft and flexible, but also easily undergoes repeated radio frequency (RF) sealing. PVC medical devices can be sterilized by steam and, if done correctly, by radiation. Alternatives to PVC don’t have the same clarity, they either don’t do RF sealing, or RF sealing is very slow or difficult to do.
